Primary Innovation Lab - Update 1

Learn Friday, 04 Mar 2022

We have a responsibility to ensure that our students are equipped with skills for the 21st century.

"Play is the highest form of research."
— Albert Einstein

In primary school, we have been doing this through a diverse range of classroom experiences and our specialist electives, including Thinkspace (technology, critical thinking and problem-solving), Create (art and design), Connect (communication and drama), Music (creativity, listening and expression), Sport (coordination and teamwork), Wellbeing and Library. Through these experiences, we want to provide opportunities to increase students' confidence and resilience when collaborating, creating and designing. To further enhance this aspect of our school program, we have identified the need for a creative, self-directed learning environment where students can create, invent and explore.

The Primary Innovation Lab is based on research demonstrating that maker spaces such as this in schools can effectively develop children's creativity, critical thinking, design thinking and digital skills. Students will have the opportunity to develop a 'can do' attitude as they begin to understand the design process and appreciate that each step will bring them one step closer to a completed project.

The space will be a fantastic way to engage students in hands-on learning through making while having the opportunity to explore concepts across all genres, including the arts, sciences, engineering and technologies.

I look forward to sharing more with you about this project over the next few weeks.
