Primary Innovation Lab - Update 3

Learn Monday, 21 Mar 2022

As our Primary Innovation Lab comes closer to its completion, we are working behind the scenes to plan the design process experiences that this space will provide. The space has been designed on the Stanford University D-Lab to help students develop the design process thinking.

At a basic level 'Design thinking' is a creative process that engages a person in opportunities to identify problems and then create ideas to work out the best solution.

Design thinking relies on the human ability to be intuitive, to recognize patterns, and to construct ideas that are emotionally meaningful as well as functional.

Here is an example of how a student could be given a design process problem to solve. If we asked one of our CCAS students to design a car, they will probably go crazy and come up with the coolest cars that ever existed but what if you asked them to design a way to transport people from one place to another? The solutions can be unlimited.

The student starts thinking about solutions to the actual problem rather than redesigning an existing solution- it’s innovation at its best and very powerful. This is an example of the type of opportunities we want to give our students here at CCAS.
