Students Create Op Art

Primary Thursday, 03 Mar 2022

In Art, Year 6 students created a collaborative artwork of interlocking minimalistic colour patterns.

Students learned about op artists (optical artists), particularly Bridget Riley, and how they use a limited palette of colours to create visual effects.

The students could not allow the same colour to be touching itself along a straight edge and had to use as few colours as possible to compute the design. Some managed the challenge in 3 or 4 colours while others used 5 colours. The shapes interlock when placed together giving an intricate overall design of shapes and colours. All students contributed to the overall piece even though individually they created something different.
