Welcome to Kindergarten! It is always such an exciting time as we get ready for this significant step into the first year of formal schooling. We are so pleased you have chosen Central Coast Adventist School and want to welcome you to the CCAS community.

As you prepare for next year, we hope that the information provided is helpful in answering your questions, and complements the experiences your child has enjoyed through Pre Kindergarten and the Jump Start program.

Please remember that we are here to support both you and your child through this transition and want to ensure your child has the best possible start to school here at CCAS.

What should children be able to do so that they are ready for school?
  • Getting dressed independently
  • School bag familiarisation so that students can pack their own bag and learn how to arrange their belongings so that they fit
  • Toileting independently
  • Following one step instructions
  • Blowing nose and sneezing into elbow
  • Fine motor skills
What social skills should children have coming into Kindergarten?
  • Making friends
  • Sharing toys
  • Waiting your turn
  • Saying goodbye
When do children have breaks during the day?
  • Lunch 11:05-11:55 am
  • Recess 1:00-1:20 pm
  • Fruit Break
What literacy skills are recommended?
  • Writing name
  • Reading- listening to stories read by a parent or carer 
  • Language skills- waiting turn to speak, use appropriate voice level, gestures, eye contact and respond to simple questions
How can I best prepare my child for their first day of school?
  • Read the CCAS Kindy social story a week before school starts and talk about the exciting things to look forward to at school 
  • Get a good nights sleep
  • Have breakfast together and talk positively about school
  • Saying a quick goodbye
  • Pick up - keeping it positive

  • Practice getting ready for school
  • Read the Kindergarten social story with your child
  • Don’t forget to order your child's lunch online if buying lunch from the canteen
  • Fruit Break - please pack fresh fruit or vegetables in a separate container
  • Pencil grip - see pencil grip sheet to help your child hold their pencil correctly
  • Letter formation sheet - please teach name writing in lower case
  • Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher with any concerns
