Design & Technology - Engineering focus
Course Summary
In Design & Technology - Engineering focus, students will be presented with projects that are engaging and relate to real-world problems. The content learning in this subject will be focused on the project that the class is working on.
Some suggested projects could be:
- Design and produce a “go-kart” as students learn about engineered systems and transport.
- Draft and model a sustainable home as students learn about information and communication technologies, architecture and alternative energy.
- Create a remote control glider as students study aeronautical engineering and microcontrollers.
- Develop a device to assist people with a disability as students learn about material technologies, electronics and control systems.
- Design and construct a model F1 for STEM Racing as students study transport and aerodynamics.
Collaboration is also a common element in engineering and design teams that is seen in the workplace today. Many of the project components to be completed will be team-based.
Studying Design & Technology with an engineering focus will equip students with the skill set to select Design & Technology, Engineering Studies, or both for Years 11 and 12. There is also commonality between these HSC subjects. For both subjects, students follow a process that involves reviewing history, analysing the impact on society and the environment, learning about the scope of designers and engineers, developing skills in communication through written and graphical forms, and cultivating the ability to evaluate quality products.
While we aim to focus on engineering, we also help students develop their creativity and practical skills. Design & Technology, as well as Industrial Technology/Engineering courses, share several common objectives, including literacy, numeracy, sustainability, critical thinking, creative thinking, ethics, the design process, engineering reports, and design portfolios. They also overlap content areas including digital technology, communication, control systems, engineered systems, and material technology.
This subject is for you if you:
- Enjoy discovering how things work
- Enjoy problem-solving
- Enjoy using your creativity
- Have a desire to care for the environment and make the world a better place
- Enjoy working with your hands
