Design & Technology - Engineering focus

Course Summary

This course follows the official NSW NESA Design and Technology syllabus, tailored specifically for students who are passionate about problem-solving, mechanics, aerodynamics, and cutting-edge technology.

Throughout Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10), students tackle real-world engineering challenges. There is a strong emphasis on teamwork, project management, and hands-on collaboration, equipping students with the core skills required for modern engineering and STEM careers.

What Students Study


Year 9 Projects


STEM Racing Challenge (Formerly F1 in Schools)

Students form mini engineering teams to design, manufacture, and test miniature $CO_2$ canister-powered racing cars built strictly to professional competition regulations.

Skills & Tools: 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) air-flow testing, structural stress analysis, and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) manufacturing.


Competition Path: The project culminates in teams racing their cars against rival schools at the Hunter Regional Competition. Qualifying teams advance to represent the school at the NSW State Finals at Eastern Creek.


Aeronautical Engineering


Students explore the physics and mechanics of flight by designing, building, and piloting remote-controlled (RC) aircraft.

Skills & Tools: Principles of flight (lift, drag, thrust, and weight), aerospace materials selection, structural engineering, and radio control assembly.


Year 10 Projects


Vehicle & Chassis Engineering (Go-Karts)

Students delve into automotive engineering by designing and constructing functional go-karts.

Skills & Tools: Frame and chassis design, steering geometry, mechanical braking systems, and powertrain integration using both electric and petrol engines.


Control Systems & Biomedical Engineering (Prosthetics)

Students combine electronics and mechanical systems to design and build a working prosthetic device.

Skills & Tools: Microcontrollers, circuit design, sensor integration, linkages, and mechanical actuation to solve real biomedical challenges.
